Patrick, thanks for posting this one for comparison. Quite a difference, isn't it? I must admit that I like the HDR version better, mainly because I like the darker foreground. On this version my eye settles at the bottom because it's brighter, while on the first version you're drawn in and up to the sky. As I said before, you handle the HDR processing nicely.

I also prefer the HDR one.

Michelle, yes in such images the process is important but i think it's a really global thing. It starts before shooting when you're in front of the scene and imagine what will be the final image and it ends when you end working on the file and print it or when you return on the place for another try.
