I went yesterday morning to a new place around Annecy lake. More precisely it was the pier of Menthon Saint Bernard. It was really soon and really cold. I expected more snow on the mountains but the dawn light was beautiful.
A big thank you to Nikon for making large bodies still comfortable to use with frosted fingers.

This post reinforces two of my camera queries.
1.Do you feel happy taking your camera out in the cold?
I have been carrying it kangaroo pouch style, and then only for a few minutes at a time, after acclimitizing the camera in a cold room first.
2. I agree with what you say in your profile. And what disappoints me about my new Nikon (D300) is that the pictures are far too precise and lifelike: the poetry is lost, and I can't get it back. (coming directly from coolpix 990, which was dreamy.)
Any suggestions?

Hello, here are some answers :
1 - Yes i like taking my camera out in the cold and until now i had no problem with that. I carry it with three lenses plus remote controler plus many other things in a large Tamrac belt bag.
I just keep the batteries warm against my body when they are not needed in the camera.
2 - Here are things i can suggest :
* Try a lensbaby lens.
* Try some Cokin creative filters.
* Experiment with post-processing.

I had never heard of LensBaby, Still, I don't think that distant or peripheral blurring is what I am after.
Besides, that can often be achieved with stopping down, like I do for flower portraits.
B.t.w. the picture you liked was not taken with the D300.
Seeing that I shoot in Neutral, I have to try processing.
I might have to tinker with the Standard or even Vivid setting and adjust them to my taste.
It is just that undefinable something (Je ne sais quoi ;-) that is missing. Still, handling that camera is wonderful. I love taking a full 4 GB at a time, but it is the consequent 'developing' which is far from uplifting :-)

Yes, most of these images are done with a D200 and yes i change lenses in the cold. About switching lenses with bad weather i think you just have to take care that no water comes into the camera while it's open neither on the rear part of the lens.
