Weekly commented photo # 32 - Breaking waves on the Mediterranean coast

Breaking waves on the Presqu'île de Giens - Provence
Breaking waves on the Presqu'île de Giens - Provence

No, i'm not back in Provence and this image was done a little more than 2 years ago.
It was a very windy day under dull light on the Prequ'île de Giens and i remember to have walk more than making images.

I choose this one for my Weekly commented photo exercise because i found it to be a good example of the difference between shooting for print and shooting for stock.

Most of my print sales come from images with impressive light and vivid colors (like this one) while most of my licensed photos have a more common looking. Please, note that's not an absolute rule.

Some days i shoot just for prints and some days just for stock but most often i tend to share my time between exploration, making photos for my stock when the light is OK and making images for art prints when the light is at its best.
I don't know if it's the best way to oragnize a photographic day but it works for me for many years.

I've never sold a print of the image posted above but it was licensed at least 3 times since it was done. So i really don't regret my day walking in the wind and flying sand.

In conclusion i invite you to read a very good article from Guy Tal about waiting the light.

A very soft dawn on the Mediterranean coast

Mediterranean dawn at Le Port du Niel

During the second part of august, we went twice to sleep at the sea. To park the van we choose the little pier of Le Port du Niel on the Presqu'île de Giens. That's a very peaceful place and you can't see it on these images but the coast all around is really wild and beautiful. I hope to return there before the end of summer for a more serious photographic work.

Same day and same place that this one posted a few monts ago. They are though very different.

The five sites to discover :

I met Mark on Flickr. He travels a lot in Europe and his galleries are full of landscapes, cityscapes, abstracts etc. I love the dynamism of his images.

http://www.danielsroka.com
Daniel is a master of botanical abstracts. His work is very beautiful.

http://www.brucepercy.com/
Stunning images from many parts of the world.

http://www.adamgibbs.com/

That little path in the forest - HDR

Forest path on the Presqu'île de Giens - HDR
Forest path on the Presqu'île de Giens

After many days of rain, it finally stopped on saturday morning. As my wife and daughter took a little holidays with friends, i spent most of the week walking on the coast. Light was not awesome but sometimes the sun poped out of the clouds and let me get some interesting pics. You'll see more soon :)

About this one, it was done from 6 exposures with my most usual workflow : NEF files processed with SilkyPix, HDR work with Photomatix and resulting image reprocessed with SilkyPix.
Note : I've also done a first version using only 4 of these exposures but obtained really more artifacts in some small branches against the blue sky. Introducing the 2 other exposures gave more informations to Photomatix and strongly reduced these defaults.

Same place, same day than the one in this previous post but a few hours before. Not the best hour of the day for landscape photography put it can certainly result in some typical postcards :)

One from my (very) recent walk threw the Presqu'île de Giens.
For my regular readers, the Presqu'île de Giens is the land you very often saw on the horizon in many of my previous seascapes.
