A high definition waterfall photo you can browse with zoomify

Waterfall

Done and posted here a little more than one year ago, this image became one of my most popular photo.

It was made by stitching 9 frames with PTGui. The resulting file was cropped to fit the desired aspect ratio and the final image weights around 25 megapixels.
I thought i could deserve a detailed view with zoomify. Once more, what you can see here with zoomify is from a compressed jpeg file and doesn't exactly reflects the real file quality but i can give an idea of what we can do with softwares like PTGui.

Notre Dame des Anges, a curious church in Provence - HDR

Inside view of Notre Dame des Anges
Notre Dame des Anges

Notre Dames des Anges is right on the top of the highest mountain around my village. This place is dedicated to a saint who had the power to cure people diseases. The walls are covered with gifts that peoples offered to say thank you or ask for a cure. Not only the walls, some special and bigger gifts also hang on the ceiling. When i did this shot, over my head were a little boat and ... a dead crocodile.

Click on the picture above to see it at a better size or click here if you want to visit the big file with zoomify.

If you often come here, you may know that i like and follow the work of Michelle Basic Hendry an canadian painter. Twitter just told me she had terminated a church painting and wrote about it. If you're right brained, you can beleive that ideas cross the oceans :)

Another Alpilles landscape

High definition landscape around Eyguieres in Provence
Cliffs around Eyguières - Alpilles Massif

Another view of the Alpilles Massif, also done with my old Nikon D100, the Tamron 17-50 and PTGui.

12 frames were stitched to produce a high definition file which has been cropped to fit the 4x3 aspect ratio. I'm always amazed to see how PTGui can perfectly stitch images with such a complicated vegetation.

You can visit the original file whith Zoomify here. Not exactly the original file because the 16 bits TIF file has been converted to a 8 bits jpeg before uploading but it can give you an idea.

Tips for zoomify on blogspot

Powered by Zoomify

You can also have a look at a larger version of this image.
One of my old posts recently received some commments asking for help about Zoomify implementation on blogspot so i decided to post some tips here.

Files hosting : You need a web host for the zoomify viewer and for you image file folders. Don't try to upload them directly on blogspot, you can't do that.
On this web host, create one folder to receive the zoomifyViewer.swf file. Then, create one subfolder of this folder to receive the content of the tiles folder and the ImageProperties.xml file created by zoomify.
For the next part, we'll assume that :
  • Your web host URL is :
    http://mywebhost.com
  • The URL of the folder receiving the swf file is :
    http://mywebhost.com/zoom/
  • The URL of the folder receiving the files generated by zoomify is :
    http://mywebhost.com/zoom/image/

Code editing : Zoomify gives a Template.html file. You need to edit its content in the following way.
  • Replace the width and height values with the values you want.
  • Replace the URLs of the swf file and of the image folder with the above values.
When done, save the html file on your local machine, open it with your browser. If you have all done correctly you should have a blank page showing your image in the zoomify viewer.
If it's OK, edit again the Template.html file, remove the first 3 lines and the last 3 (html, body, div tags). Remove also the blank lines.
Blogspot doesn't like the newlines into the html tables codes. So delete them all until you have all the code on one unique line. Connect to your blogspot account, post one new message, go to the Edit HTML code tab and copy the big code line int the text area. Check the preview and it should be right :)

Jump into a high definition image

Powered by Zoomify

Zoomify is a friendly tool for photographers and web designers. It gives a free and easy way to show some zoomable high definition images on any website or blog.
I think it can be very useful for a digital photographer because it permits to show all the details in an original image file without the need of diplaying the full size picture and so without giving anybody the possibility to stole the high resolution file.

If you want to try Zoomify, just download it from Zoomify website. You will obtain a special Flash viewer and the Zoomify executable software.
Just run the software, open the image you want to work with and that's all. Zoomify will split the image in many tiles saved in a special folder and produce an html template. You can test the result on your own computer by opening the template in your web browser.
To publish it on your website, you need :
  • To upload the Flash viewer and the tiles folder on your website.
  • To design an html page (or a blog post) with some of the template code.
The image above is available for sale as a fine art print in my Etsy shop.

Just a few things

sunflower field landscape photograph
On Sunday i had my first sale on Etsy. Someone bought a 45x30cm fine art print of this sunflowers field landscape.

I've just updated the Useful Tools links list on the right column of this blog with one new link.
  • Zoomify provides a nice and free tool to make zoomable web images. Very simple, this tool permits to show some high definition images on the net. I think i will soon show some here and probably implement it in my panoramic images gallery on patmo.net.
