Long exposure around Pain de Sucre waterfall

Long exposure image around Pain de Sucre waterfall
Pain de Sucre waterfall on Vézéronce river

Still posting images from my last outing to this waterfall. This one was done in the very late afternoon but i needed my Hoya ND 400 filter to get a long enough exposure for this effect on the "lake".

As we have an awful weather almost every day, i spend a lot of time browsing the net and looking at maps, searching for some interesting places to photograph and i found yesterday another waterfall named Pain de Sucre in Ain department. Actually, like Jura, this department really has many and many rivers and falls and is a very good photographic destination at spring and autumn.

Autumn tree along Fornant river

About one week ago along Fornant river.

I was not very active here during the past weeks. One of the clients for which i make architecture images about wood made buildings asked me to design an application to show my images on a large multitouch screen in Paris during the next days.
I had in a very short time to choose and buy hardware and software and develop the presentation.

I choose a 46 inches Samsung display with a multitouch overlay from PQ Labs. About software, after a few tries and as i was in a hurry, i went for IntuiFace Presentation. It's a very nice application, really user friendly and which doesn't need any real programmation. It has of course a few limits but it made the job.

Dusk time in the mountains over Annecy lake

Dusk time in the mountains over Annecy lake

One more from friday, still done while walking down from Mont Baron.

During my long time waiting for a correct light i met a very nice couple and we had an interesting and pleasant discussion about photography and the joy of living in a so beautiful region. They were wiser than me and left the mountains before the night :)

Night comes on Annecy lake

Night comes on Annecy lake

Mont Veyrier and Mont Baron are two of the closest mountains above the east coast of Annecy lake.
Viewed from the city, they can look as the same mountain but when you climb them, you can really distinct the two summits.

I went there on friday afternoon. I spent the first hours hiking, looking for interesting points of view.
My most interesting images of the lake were done at dusk while walking down from Mont Baron. This one was the last one, done in really late dusk and after i had a "funny" walk in the steep and dark forest without the head lamp i forgot at home ...

In the background, you can see the mountains of Massif des Bauges.

Late evening on Annecy lake

Long exposure photograph of Annecy lake by a late summer dusk
Late evening on Annecy lake

I've just spent about one week in Haut Jura Natural Park to meet some nice friends. I just escaped one day for exploring a deep forest, after hours and hours of walking on little paths and climbing mountains, i went back at night without finding any good place for beautiful photography. Some days are like that ...

Yesterday i went back home for a little office work and in the evening i drove to Annecy for a few images around the lake. This one is the last i did and is also my own favourite.
Long exposure is due to the low light of the late evening and i balanced sky and lake with a 0.6 GND filter.

Evening light on Duingt castle

Evening light on Duingt castle

After my first visit to this pretty monument last week, i returned there this evening. I waited a long time after dusk for something like a nice blue hour but i think that this one is my best.
It was done a little after 8pm and the long exposure was possible thank's to my Hoya ND 400 filter.

One more image from this serie i did in the first week of May.
Once more, i used my Hoya ND 400 filter for the long exposure in full daylight.

Double waterfall in Castran canyon

Photograph of a double waterfall in the canyon of Castran river
Double waterfall in Castran canyon

In my first post about this place i wrote i couldn't find the name of the river running here. A more complete search with different maps told me it's the Castran river.

This image was also done during my first visit to the canyon. I returned there on last friday, the stream was still running nicely, the green forest was wonderfully lush but the waterfall was dry ...

Noname waterfall in an unknown canyon

Noname waterfall in an unknown canyon

That's a new place i discovered just the day before my departure to Paris.
We were hiking with my family in the forest close to our home and discovered a little stream running underwood. After about a one hour walk along the river, we heard the noise of this double waterfall. After a few more steps in the woods, we discovered this small canyon.

Back home, i had a look at the map, found the river and the waterfall but no name was given. A rapid look at the web didn't give more information.

I returned on the place with a camera in the evening for images of the waterfall and i expect to return in the next days for more photos of the stream under the springtime woods.

Dusk light on Nernier harbor

Dusk light on Nernier harbor

One more from my last visit to Nernier.
It was not easy to get because the wind was blowing strongly at dusk time making the boats to move and many duks were crossing the lake leaving some "dirty" tracks on the silky water.

Houses along Geneva lake at Nernier

Long exposure image with houses along Geneva lake
Nernier, houses along Geneva lake

I returned yesterday to Nernier on the borders of Geneva lake. I wanted some images of the pier in the late afternoon.
Arrived soon, i took a little time to explore the village which is also known as the pearl of Léman lake. It's a very pretty place and makes me think to a little Saint Tropez in the Alps.

The weather was less cold than the day of my first visit but still fresh because of the wind blowing from North and giving a clear blue sky.

The long exposure in day light for this image is due to the use of my Hoya ND 400 filter.

Note : Images of my first day in Nernier where posted one month ago on my french website. You can have a look here.

Blue hour on Geneva lake

Photo of Geneva lake at blue hour in winter with the banks covered with ice
Blue hour on Geneva lake at Nernier harbor

Although the real name of this lake is Léman lake, out of France it's mostly known as Geneva lake. One part is french and the other is swiss.
The photo was made in France and the mountains in the backgroud are in Switzerland.

During the freezing cold we had a few time ago this pier looked like an artic place with amazing ice sculptures done by the wind.
I could go there only this afternoon. I was not sure to find some ice because the weather is a little more hot for some days but i wanted to explore a little this unknown place.

One more image from 2 days ago. So it was a great sunday afternoon.

Cold was still really strong and i spent about one hour standing with my tripod in front of the lake photographing the changes of light during dusk time.
I'll post images from time to time here but i published the entire serie yesterday on my french website.

Another winter scene in Fornant river and a few words about my portfolio on Whytake.net

Winter image of the Fornant river in France
Winter along Fornant river

I returned yesterday to Fornant river for another visit to the place i've discovered on monday.
The wind was crazy. I spent there just an hour according to the files times on my CF card but it seemed an eternity. The goal was to make some long exposure images of this little waterfall with my Hoya ND 400 filter, once done i went back home quickly.

Some weeks ago i've started to build a portfolio on Whytake.net.

Whytake.net is a community website for nature photographers. It's nicely done with some very good features and it's a nice place to show your nature images (nature only).
It's not a place for competition where photographers run after comments and fav but it includes a kind of blog where you can post updates in your portfolio and other things about nature photography. You can also follow other photographers you like.

Snow and ice on Fornant river

Photo of Fornant river in France covered with snow and ice
Snow and ice on Fornant river

One more image from the beginning of the week done a few hours before the one i posted a few days ago.

When i arrived at the river, i was hapilly surprised to find some deep and strong ice. After a few tests, i started to walk on the ice, exploring the river for some interesting point of views. When i arrived where i made this image, i was looking for the best place to setup my tripod when the ice broke under my left foot and my leg plunged in the flow to the knee, filling my boots with really cold water.

I hesitated between continuing my work during all the afternoon with a wet foot by a temperatured really under -10 celsius and going back home. I choose the first option. Although it was really uncomfortable, this day was probably a unique occasion to make images of the cold winter here. I could work around the river until dusk and when i came back home, my foot had no trouble.

A cold winter morning along Fornant river

A cold morning along Fornant river

For a few days, we have a siberian weather here. Temperature is often below -10° celcius, strong wind and a little snow.
I went this morning to Fornant river because the canyon is naturally protected from the wind. I started with a few images of the river caught by the ice in a special places, the i went to Barbennaz waterfall and terminated by a walk along a part of the river i had left unexplored until today.
I made the image posted here in this last place, the long exposure in day light was possible thank's to my Hoya ND 400 filter.

Blue hour on the mountains of Massif des Bauges Natural Park

Photograph at blue hour of the mountains of Massif des Bauges in winter
Photograph at blue hour of the mountains of Massif des Bauges in winter

A photo from yesterday.
I was in Massif des Bauges Natural Park to make images of a large building entirely built with local wood. This work was finished in the beginning of the afternoon and i was able to go to the mountains for a few personnal images under a beautiful light.
The only trouble was that i was really not dressed to stay out by a winter dusk in the mountains. I just had somme rubber boots in my car. The snow was not too deep and hardened by the cold. So, i could hike a little in the snowy fields to find some interesting point of view but a moderate wind was blowing from the north ...

Weekly commented photo # 52 - Winter dusk on Annecy lake

Long exposure photograph of Annecy lake by a winter dusk
Winter dusk on Annecy lake

So that's the last week of 2011 and my Weekly Commented Photo project reaches its end (you can read a short introduction here).
It was a bit fun but not really easy for me french speaking photographer to find every friday some english words to put under a photo. At least, it was a good exercise :)

I went to Annecy on last friday expecting to find some snow on the mountains around the lake. As you can devine i was a little disapointed and i just found one or two interesting views at dusk time when the christmas light started.
A little time before i took this photo, the place was overcrowded by tourists. I don't know why but they all nicely disapeared in a few minutes.

The image was done with a soft and light GND filter. The exposure was 30 seconds long.

See you next year !
